Doctor’s report-We take returns and warranty issues very seriously and put priority on 1-helping customers in the field and 2-Getting returns back to VAC for evaluation. Too often we get little or no information on the return. It has been as bad as product just arriving with no RGA associated. We have a return authorization form we call the “doctors report”. We do our best to get this to our distributors, oems, and end users to get some type of application information on the form-even just a serial number. We get Ips returned, but have no record of the positioners serial number associated with the Ip. We track all product shipments by serial number. We have been very “generous” with the warranty replacement and return program. However, we are finding too many abuses of the system and must be more diligent with the whole process. Enclosed is a copy of the form, the form is on the website (Under the tool man on the home page) and can be faxed or emailed by any VAC employee. We want this form completed, as much as possible, BEFORE we issue an RGA number. We need the help of our distributor and oem partners to work with us on this program. The ultimate result will be a better evaluation and Inspection Report. We want to provide accurate information in return and need your help (as much as to the extent possible) in providing us with accurate information up front. We deal with others in the industry that is VERY rigid with their return policy. We see these events as opportunities; so we want to keep everything positive…please help us. We have added a note that non-warranty returns can result in a fee. These fees have thus far ranged from $50-$100 depending on the condition of the return and time and work needed to get the unit in working order-this is just for time, parts needed would be extra. So often the units just need some maintenance and calibration-something that could be handled in the field, but are not these days.

NEMA Ratings vs. FM/UL/CSA/Atex-We are often asked for a Nema 7 or Nema 9 (National Electrical Manufactures Association) positioner. While our positioner (pneumatic portion) of the package is NEMA 4X rated, the “explosion proof” ratings of our V100/200/D400 fall under the FM/UL/CSA/Atex ratings that are defined generally rated by Class, Division and Groups. The specific rating information can be found under each product on our website. There are various crossover documents available on the web, such as the following: http://www.nema.org/prod/be/enclosures/upload/NEMA_Enclosure_Types.pdf

ISO Mounting Kit-There will slight modification to our ISO kits within the next 2-3 weeks. A more compact design will utilize just the mounting holes needed for positioners. The offset holes will be removed. Brackets and fasteners will remain stainless steel.

D400-A new Rev 3 software is out for this product. There are several subtle improvements but one very significant improvement would be in the accuracy of the unit; it has gone from having 4000 steps to 16000. This is very helpful on small steps and small stroke linear valves. It is also recommended when using a volume booster with the D400 to use a unit that has adjustable gain capabilities; this is for fine-tuning the whole package. Also keep in mind the D400 is the only unit on the market that has adaptive control capabilities, allowing the customer to perform a “package re-calibration” while the unit is in service and not disrupt service. This allows the customer to keep the package operating an optimum performance at any time. As things wear and seals loosen, the “bench set” that was established on day one (new) will have changed, with adaptive control you can update the D400 to take in to account these changes and update it’s performance….and you never have to take the unit (package) off line to make these updates!!

Split Ranging-We continue to get calls about split ranging or “odd” signal ranges. Split ranging can be easily accomplished if you have the C1 cam. Just following the maintenance manual for the product you are using and calibrate the unit per the instructions-it is a standard feature of the C1 cam. Of course the D400 is capable of split ranging, which will be a change within the menu under P2 Set point. Odd signal ranges can be handled as well with all VAC products. Such as 4-18 mAs or 5-19 mAs…there is enough zero and span adjustment to allow for this. The D400 can be set as min set point and max set point at any number between 4-20 mA.
